What is happening?
Due to the success of Pace’s I-55 bus on the shoulder express service, Pace intends to construct a new building to accommodate waiting riders at the Burr Ridge Park-n-Ride, 7650 Lincolnshire Drive in Burr Ridge. The existing facility was constructed in 1996 and covers 4.4 acres. It has only one bus stop shelter with parking for 83 cars. Today, as many as 115 riders per day board Pace buses at this location and the parking lot is often filled, leading to problematic congestion in the area due to cars parked on nearby streets. Ridership has already increased as a result of the December 2024 service expansion and is expected to increase even further when the new building and parking lot expansion are complete.
What will be built?
The new building will be approximately 1400 square feet and will include a waiting/seating area, accessible public restrooms, and large canopies at both entrances. The existing bus shelter will remain. Site improvements will include reconstruction and expansion of the parking lot to approximately 197 total spaces, including 6 ADA spaces and 4 EV spaces with provisions for additional future EV charging stations. Additional site improvements will include new bench seating, bike racks, lighting upgrades, landscaping, and stormwater management. The new facility will be fully accessible and offer riders a more welcoming and comfortable environment to wait for the bus.
When will construction occur?
Pace seeks Village approval by spring 2026. Based on that timeline, construction would start in September 2026 and be complete by December 2027.
What can I expect during construction?
Buses will operate on their normal schedule. Pace will work to limit any reduction of available parking spaces in the lot during construction. Even when certain portions of the lot need to close while work is being performed, that will happen only after newly built parking spaces are open for the public to use. For nearby residents, you can expect construction to occur between 7am and 7pm on weekdays starting in September 2026, and to last approximately 15 months.
