RTA Trip Planner

The RTA Trip Planner allows travelers to plan trips in the Chicago region using public transit (CTA, Metra, and Pace buses and trains) that include driving, biking, and walking directions.

Just enter your start point, end point and time of day and goroo will provide travel instructions.

» Click here to plan your trip!

Pace also provides video descriptions of many of its routes. If you go to Pace's YouTube channel, you can click on the appropriate route number and watch a 2- to 3-minute video. The video shows all the streets on which the bus travels, highlighting local landmarks and major destinations. It also highlights special features of certain routes, such as route variants at certain times of day. The videos are designed to provide visual assistance to those who are unfamiliar with a particular bus route. When used in conjunction with the bus route map and schedule, people traveling in northeastern Illinois have plenty of information about how to commute stress-free and cost-effectively.

Reading the schedule and map

In case of any questions regarding schedules, please call Pace Customer Relations at 847-364-7223, option 3, or the RTA Travel Information Center at 312-836-7000.

The Schedule Cover

The schedule's cover shows the route number and name, major destinations served, the effective date of the schedule and days of service. Be sure to check the days of service on the front panel of the schedule to ensure that the route operates on the day you wish to ride. If you find yourself with multiple schedules for a single route, please refer to the date at the bottom of the front panel to find the most recent version.

The Schedule Map

Each printed and digital schedule contains a detailed route map. The numbered circles on the map represent 'time points,' which correspond to numbers and locations on the timetable. Most time points are located at a main intersection or popular destinations and are meant as reference points to help riders judge what time a bus will be at a particular location. Please note that the bus does stop at other locations besides the time points represented on the route schedules. If flagged (or waved) down, most buses will stop at any intersection where it is safe to do so; however, some routes stop only at posted bus stops. Please check the schedule to see if your route serves posted stops only. The map also includes transfer locations (where other bus routes intersect with this route) and arrows, indicating the direction of travel. Additional information can be found on the schedule's timetable.

Your Pace web site provides two kinds of maps for your use, printable and interactive. Our printable schedules feature a symbolic map, clearly showing the route and major locations, transfer points and transit centers. These maps are monochrome and usually are not to absolute scale. They also lack background streets and community boundaries. Interactive maps are created by computers and can show many kinds of information that you select. You can turn or off several sizes of streets, state highways, federal highways, other transit services, community boundaries, community attractions, libraries, schools, hospitals and or museums. The maps are re-created depending on your selections.

Both kinds of maps can be located on each route's informational page.

The Schedule Timetable

The timetable lists major time points and the arrival times at these points. The time points are numbered and named for the general location and correspond to the numbered locations on the map. If there is an asterisk (*), number, letter or symbol next to a time, be certain to look beneath the timetable for additional schedule information. To determine the time the bus will arrive at your stop:

  • Locate the stop on the map
  • Find the nearest time point
  • If the closest time point is before your stop, the bus will arrive at your stop shortly after the noted time
  • If it is after your stop, the bus will arrive slightly before that time

Timetables differ for weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, so do not assume that the bus you ride Monday through Friday will keep the same schedule on the weekend or holidays.

Real Time Bus Arrival Information

Pace offers its customers predictions about bus arrival and departure times based on real-time information using buses’ locations. See the Bus Tracker feature of Pace’s website or, for other ways to access real-time information, see the Real-Time Information page.
